Barclays Cracks Down on Crypto — No More Credit Card Buys Allowed

Barclays to Ban Credit Card Crypto Purchases From June 27

Barclays, one of the biggest banks in the UK, is about to block credit card purchases of cryptocurrency. Starting Friday, June 27, customers using Barclaycard-branded credit cards will no longer be able to buy digital currencies like Bitcoin or Ethereum.

This move places Barclays in line with other major UK banks that have taken similar steps in recent years, citing consumer protection and financial risk concerns.

Why Is Barclays Banning Credit Card Crypto Transactions

Barclays quietly updated its website on Wednesday with a notice informing customers about the upcoming restriction. The bank explained the decision by pointing to the high volatility and risks in the crypto market.

“We’re doing this because a fall in the price of crypto assets could lead to customers finding themselves in debt they can’t afford to repay,” the message read.

In simple terms, if crypto prices crash—as they often do—Barclays fears customers could be left with massive credit card bills they can’t pay back. This is especially risky because cryptocurrencies are not backed or insured like traditional investments.

No Protection If Things Go Wrong

Unlike traditional financial products, cryptocurrencies don’t come with the same safety net. Barclays made it clear that:

  • Crypto purchases are not covered by the Financial Ombudsman Service

  • No protection is offered under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS)

For context, the FSCS protects up to £85,000 (approx. $116,000) if a financial institution fails. But crypto losses? You’re on your own.

Other Banks Already Took Similar Action

This isn’t a first-of-its-kind move. In March 2023, major UK banks like HSBC and Nationwide also blocked crypto purchases using credit cards. That came shortly after the 2022 crypto crash, when several major firms collapsed, leaving investors with huge losses.

While Barclays hasn’t clearly said why it’s enforcing this rule now—long after the initial wave of crypto chaos—analysts believe the decision might be tied to ongoing concerns about crypto regulation, fraud, and debt accumulation among younger investors.

What’s Still Allowed

While credit card purchases of crypto will be blocked, Barclays has not banned all forms of crypto activity. Here’s what we know so far:

You can still use debit cards or bank transfers (unless stated otherwise in future updates)
You can’t buy crypto using Barclaycard credit cards starting June 27

So if you were planning to load up on Bitcoin with borrowed money, that option is off the table.

Why Banks Are Nervous About Crypto

Banks around the world are getting cautious about how their customers interact with crypto. Here’s why:

1. Extreme Volatility

Crypto prices can swing wildly in minutes. This makes it risky for average consumers—especially those using borrowed money like credit cards.

2. Lack of Regulation

Cryptocurrency isn’t as tightly regulated as traditional banking. If an exchange shuts down or a coin fails, there’s no legal guarantee that you’ll get your money back.

3. Rising Crypto Scams

Crypto-related scams and frauds are on the rise. Blocking credit card purchases is one way banks are limiting exposure to these risks.

Barclays Isn’t Talking — Yet

CoinDesk reached out to Barclays for more details about the timing and reasoning behind this move. But the bank declined to comment beyond the statement on its website.

That leaves a lot of questions unanswered. Is this the beginning of stricter crypto regulations by UK banks? Could debit card crypto purchases be the next to go?

What You Can Do If You Want to Keep Buying Crypto

If you’re a crypto investor using Barclays, here are your next steps:

Switch to Debit Cards or Bank Transfers

Most exchanges accept debit cards and direct bank transfers. Just double-check if Barclays is still allowing those methods (as of now, they are).

 Use a Different Bank

Other UK banks still allow crypto credit card purchases, though this is becoming less common.

 Use Regulated Exchanges

Stick to reputable and regulated exchanges like Coinbase, Kraken, or Bitstamp. This can reduce your risk of scams and help maintain access to your funds.

Is This the Start of a Bigger Crackdown

Barclays’ decision might signal a wider trend where traditional banks pull away from risky crypto-related activities. After a rocky few years for crypto—marked by scandals, bankruptcies, and extreme price drops—financial institutions are being extra cautious.

If more banks follow suit, the days of buying Bitcoin on credit could soon be over.

Whether this is good or bad depends on your perspective:

  • For cautious consumers, it’s a wise move to prevent falling into debt over volatile assets.

  • For crypto believers, it’s another frustrating roadblock in the fight for mainstream adoption.
