Is Bitcoin Broken? Mempool Nearly Empty as Prices Hit New Peaks

Bitcoin Transactions Plunge Even as Prices Hit All-Time Highs: What’s Going On?

Bitcoin (BTC) is trading at record highs, with prices comfortably sitting above $100,000. But behind the scenes, a surprising and troubling trend is emerging — almost no one is using the network.

Despite the sky-high value of each Bitcoin, the blockchain’s mempool — the place where pending transactions wait to be processed — is nearly empty. Experts say this shows weak demand and declining activity from everyday users, painting a strange picture of Bitcoin’s future.

What Is the Mempool and Why Does It Matter

The mempool, or memory pool, is where all pending Bitcoin transactions wait before being picked up by miners and added to the blockchain. It acts like a queue, and a full mempool often means heavy activity and competition among users to get their transactions confirmed.

When Bitcoin is in high demand — especially during bull runs — the mempool is usually packed. But now, it’s nearly deserted.

On Saturday, there were only about 5,000 transactions waiting in Bitcoin’s mempool.
Even later, at press time, the count had only reached 15,000 — still extremely low compared to the 150,000 seen when Bitcoin first crossed $100,000 in late 2024.

BTC Soars, But Activity Shrinks

Since March 2025, the number of pending transactions in the mempool has hovered between 3,000 and 30,000. This shows that, despite Bitcoin’s massive price surge, there’s weak on-chain activity.

Joël Valenzuela, director of marketing and business development, pointed out the issue on X (formerly Twitter):

“Bitcoin’s mempool is almost completely empty. The percentage of miner revenue coming from fees is now just a fraction of a percent,” he said.

This is a major red flag because when users flood the network, transaction fees usually spike — and miners earn more from those fees. But with barely any transactions, fees are almost nonexistent.

Where Did All the Bitcoin Users Go

Valenzuela didn’t hold back his criticism:

“Almost all of Bitcoin’s actual users have gone away. At all-time price highs, too!”

He warned that this disconnect between high prices and low usage could lead to a major crisis. If users don’t return, the Bitcoin network risks becoming centralized — possibly controlled by governments or large financial institutions — a complete reversal of its original decentralized vision.

Retail Investors Missing in Action

Joao Wedson, CEO and founder of crypto analytics firm Alphractal, offered another insight:

“An idle mempool shows that retail traders are mostly absent,” Wedson said.
“When mempool activity rises again, it’s a clear sign that retail is back. A rising backlog reflects real demand.”

Retail investors — regular people, not institutions — are often the lifeblood of the Bitcoin market. Their absence may signal low trust, interest, or practical use of Bitcoin beyond just price speculation.

Why the Lack of Activity Is a Big Problem

This unusual mismatch between price and usage raises important questions:

  • Who is buying Bitcoin at $100K if not regular users? Likely large institutions or long-term holders who aren’t moving coins.

  • Why aren’t people using Bitcoin to send or receive funds? Possibly due to high fees during previous spikes, regulatory fear, or competition from faster, cheaper networks.

  • What happens if this trend continues? Miners may leave due to low fee earnings. That could weaken the security of the entire network.

Is Bitcoin Becoming a Digital Gold Vault

Some experts argue that Bitcoin is now viewed less as a currency and more as “digital gold.” Instead of being spent or traded frequently, it’s being locked away as a long-term store of value — similar to how investors treat gold.

This idea may explain the lack of mempool activity. But critics argue that if Bitcoin is rarely used, it loses its core identity as a peer-to-peer currency.

What Needs to Change

For Bitcoin to remain truly decentralized and useful, analysts say the following needs to happen:

  • Retail adoption must return: Apps and wallets must improve user experience.

  • Layer 2 networks like Lightning need wider adoption: These help scale Bitcoin and make small transactions cheaper.

  • More real-world use cases are needed: People must have reasons to use Bitcoin for more than just holding or speculation.

Bitcoin might be winning the price war, but it’s losing the usage battle.

With the mempool nearly empty and retail participation at record lows, some experts warn that the network is at a crossroads. If this trend continues, Bitcoin may become less of a revolutionary currency and more of a controlled financial asset — the opposite of what it was designed to be.
