Is Bitcoin Broken? Mempool Nearly Empty as Prices Hit New Peaks

Bitcoin Transactions Plunge Even as Prices Hit All-Time Highs: What’s Going On?

Bitcoin (BTC) is trading at record highs, with prices comfortably sitting above $100,000. But behind the scenes, a surprising and troubling trend is emerging — almost no one is using the network.

Despite the sky-high value of each Bitcoin, the blockchain’s mempool — the place where pending transactions wait to be processed — is nearly empty. Experts say this shows weak demand and declining activity from everyday users, painting a strange picture of Bitcoin’s future.

What Is the Mempool and Why Does It Matter

The mempool, or memory pool, is where all pending Bitcoin transactions wait before being picked up by miners and added to the blockchain. It acts like a queue, and a full mempool often means heavy activity and competition among users to get their transactions confirmed.

When Bitcoin is in high demand — especially during bull runs — the mempool is usually packed. But now, it’s nearly deserted.

On Saturday, there were only about 5,000 transactions waiting in Bitcoin’s mempool.
Even later, at press time, the count had only reached 15,000 — still extremely low compared to the 150,000 seen when Bitcoin first crossed $100,000 in late 2024.

BTC Soars, But Activity Shrinks

Since March 2025, the number of pending transactions in the mempool has hovered between 3,000 and 30,000. This shows that, despite Bitcoin’s massive price surge, there’s weak on-chain activity.

Joël Valenzuela, director of marketing and business development, pointed out the issue on X (formerly Twitter):

“Bitcoin’s mempool is almost completely empty. The percentage of miner revenue coming from fees is now just a fraction of a percent,” he said.

This is a major red flag because when users flood the network, transaction fees usually spike — and miners earn more from those fees. But with barely any transactions, fees are almost nonexistent.

Where Did All the Bitcoin Users Go

Valenzuela didn’t hold back his criticism:

“Almost all of Bitcoin’s actual users have gone away. At all-time price highs, too!”

He warned that this disconnect between high prices and low usage could lead to a major crisis. If users don’t return, the Bitcoin network risks becoming centralized — possibly controlled by governments or large financial institutions — a complete reversal of its original decentralized vision.

Retail Investors Missing in Action

Joao Wedson, CEO and founder of crypto analytics firm Alphractal, offered another insight:

“An idle mempool shows that retail traders are mostly absent,” Wedson said.
“When mempool activity rises again, it’s a clear sign that retail is back. A rising backlog reflects real demand.”

Retail investors — regular people, not institutions — are often the lifeblood of the Bitcoin market. Their absence may signal low trust, interest, or practical use of Bitcoin beyond just price speculation.

Why the Lack of Activity Is a Big Problem

This unusual mismatch between price and usage raises important questions:

  • Who is buying Bitcoin at $100K if not regular users? Likely large institutions or long-term holders who aren’t moving coins.

  • Why aren’t people using Bitcoin to send or receive funds? Possibly due to high fees during previous spikes, regulatory fear, or competition from faster, cheaper networks.

  • What happens if this trend continues? Miners may leave due to low fee earnings. That could weaken the security of the entire network.

Is Bitcoin Becoming a Digital Gold Vault

Some experts argue that Bitcoin is now viewed less as a currency and more as “digital gold.” Instead of being spent or traded frequently, it’s being locked away as a long-term store of value — similar to how investors treat gold.

This idea may explain the lack of mempool activity. But critics argue that if Bitcoin is rarely used, it loses its core identity as a peer-to-peer currency.

What Needs to Change

For Bitcoin to remain truly decentralized and useful, analysts say the following needs to happen:

  • Retail adoption must return: Apps and wallets must improve user experience.

  • Layer 2 networks like Lightning need wider adoption: These help scale Bitcoin and make small transactions cheaper.

  • More real-world use cases are needed: People must have reasons to use Bitcoin for more than just holding or speculation.

Bitcoin might be winning the price war, but it’s losing the usage battle.

With the mempool nearly empty and retail participation at record lows, some experts warn that the network is at a crossroads. If this trend continues, Bitcoin may become less of a revolutionary currency and more of a controlled financial asset — the opposite of what it was designed to be.

What’s next?

Ethereum has finally shattered the $4,000 barrier, marking a major milestone in its price recovery. After several months of sluggish price action, the leading altcoin has surged, driven by increased accumulation from retail investors. As Ethereum touched a local high of $4,100 during the weekend, many crypto enthusiasts are wondering: what’s fueling this rally, and what can we expect in the near future?

In this article, we’ll break down the key factors behind Ethereum’s recent surge, explore what’s next for the cryptocurrency, and assess how investors are reacting to market movements.

Ethereum Breaks $4,000: What’s Driving the Surge?

Ethereum’s impressive move past the $4,000 mark came on December 7, after months of struggle. The surge represents a significant recovery, fueled by a number of key factors, particularly an increase in retail investor activity. As Ethereum reached a local high of $4,100, the price briefly consolidated around this level before a minor correction took place.

At the time of writing, Ethereum is trading at approximately $3,950, with a market capitalization hovering at around $475 billion. Despite a slight 0.8% pullback in the past 24 hours, Ethereum’s daily trading volume has surged by 21%, now sitting at $24.5 billion. These figures suggest that the momentum is far from over.

Retail Investors Fuel Ethereum’s Price Surge

The surge in Ethereum’s price can largely be attributed to retail investors, who have shown significant buying interest over the past week. According to analytics platform IntoTheBlock (ITB), retail investors have accumulated more than $1 billion worth of ETH in just seven days. This increase in retail accumulation comes as large holders (or whales) appear to be pulling back.

A key metric that highlights this trend is the net outflow of ETH from exchanges. On December 4, a massive 104,000 ETH exited centralized exchanges, signaling increased long-term holding behavior among retail investors. When this happens, it typically indicates a bullish market sentiment, as investors move their assets off exchanges to store them in private wallets, away from potential selloffs.

The large holder-to-exchange net flow ratio is currently at -0.65%, suggesting that retail investors are more active in the market compared to institutional whales. According to ITB, Ethereum’s large holder inflows also reached a one-month low, with just 197,160 ETH entering large wallets on December 3. As a result, whales experienced a net outflow of 4,550 ETH, signaling that they may be cashing out amid growing retail demand.

Whale Activity Shows Signs of Weakening

While retail investors are pushing Ethereum’s price higher, large investors (whales) seem to be pulling back. ITB data shows a notable decline in whale transaction volume, with the total transaction volume for ETH transactions over $100,000 falling from $17 billion to $4.8 billion between December 6 and December 8.

This dramatic shift in whale activity could potentially lead to short-term volatility. Whales are often seen as major price movers, and their reduced activity may introduce a period of uncertainty. This, in turn, could trigger fear, uncertainty, and doubt (FUD) in the market, causing some retail investors to question whether Ethereum’s rally can be sustained. While this could lead to a correction, Ethereum’s overall bullish sentiment is strong, with strong growth indicators from the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector.

Spot ETH ETFs and Decentralized Finance Boost Ethereum

One of the key drivers behind Ethereum’s recent rally has been the inflow of funds into spot Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the United States. According to recent data, Ethereum spot ETFs saw a net inflow of $836.8 million during the past week, indicating that institutional investors are starting to take notice of Ethereum’s potential.

In addition to this, Ethereum’s decentralized finance (DeFi) sector has also seen strong growth. The total value locked (TVL) in Ethereum’s DeFi ecosystem surpassed $77 billion on Monday for the first time since April 2022, according to data from DeFi Llama. This is a key indicator of the growing use of Ethereum in decentralized financial applications, which further bolsters the long-term outlook for the asset.

What’s Next for Ethereum?

Looking ahead, the future of Ethereum’s price largely depends on a mix of macroeconomic factors and investor sentiment. While the recent surge has been promising, the declining whale activity could create short-term fluctuations, possibly triggering a mild correction before the next rally.

Crypto analyst Crypto Rover has drawn comparisons between Ethereum’s current price action and Bitcoin’s breakout to the $100,000 level. According to him, the movement in Ethereum shares some similarities with Bitcoin’s recent bullish cycle. However, while the price movements may appear similar, Ethereum’s price trajectory could be influenced by broader market conditions, including global economic factors and investor sentiment, which are inherently unpredictable.

Potential for a Larger Rally?

As Ethereum’s price hovers just below $4,000, it is clear that the retail-driven rally is one to watch closely. The question on everyone’s mind is whether Ethereum can maintain its momentum and continue climbing, or if the recent whale sell-off and reduced transaction volumes are early signs of a short-term pullback.

Ethereum’s DeFi ecosystem and strong institutional inflows are promising signs, and if retail investors continue to show strong interest, the altcoin could see further growth. However, with the current market volatility, it’s important for investors to stay vigilant and be prepared for potential corrections before any new price milestones are reached.

Conclusion: Ethereum’s Future Looks Bright, But Caution Is Key

Ethereum’s surge above the $4,000 mark has sparked excitement among retail investors and traders alike. With strong DeFi growth, robust institutional inflows, and increased buying activity from retail investors, Ethereum is well-positioned for future growth. However, the volatility of the cryptocurrency market means that caution is required, especially with whale activity showing signs of weakening.

For now, Ethereum is riding a wave of positive sentiment, but it remains to be seen if the price can break through the $4,100 barrier and beyond. Keep an eye on the data, monitor investor sentiment, and stay prepared for both upward and downward price movements in this volatile market.
