Crypto Shock: Ripple’s Settlement with SEC Blocked by U.S. Judge

Ripple’s $50 Million Deal with SEC Rejected by U.S. Judge

Judge Torres Says No to Letting Ripple Off Easy in Landmark Crypto Case

In a major blow to Ripple Labs and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), a federal judge in New York has rejected a joint attempt to settle one of the most high-profile crypto lawsuits in the country.

U.S. District Judge Analisa Torres dismissed the agreement that would have reduced Ripple’s penalty to $50 million, calling it an unacceptable attempt to sidestep the court’s authority.

 What Was the Case About

The case centers around Ripple’s sale of XRP tokens, which the SEC argued were unregistered securities.

In July 2023, Judge Torres made a split ruling:

  • XRP sales on public crypto exchanges were not securities.

  • But $728 million in XRP sales to institutional investors did violate U.S. securities laws.

Ripple and the SEC both appealed the decision, but later tried to settle:

  • Ripple agreed to pay only $50 million instead of the original $125 million fine.

  • Both parties also wanted to erase the judge’s injunction preventing Ripple from repeating the same legal violation.

 Judge Torres Says “No Deal”

In her decision on Thursday, Judge Torres firmly rejected the deal and criticized both Ripple and the SEC. She said the proposal failed to meet the legal standard required to undo a final court judgment.

“The parties do not have the authority to agree not to be bound by a court’s final judgment,” Torres wrote.

She emphasized that a permanent injunction and financial penalties were necessary to prevent Ripple from breaking the law again, and those shouldn’t be removed just because both sides want to settle.

 Why This Matters for Crypto

This case has been closely watched by the global crypto industry. Ripple’s XRP is the fourth-largest cryptocurrency by market value, behind Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tether, according to CoinMarketCap.

It also comes at a time when the SEC, under President Donald Trump’s second term, has been pulling back on crypto enforcement:

  • The SEC has dropped civil lawsuits against Binance, Coinbase, and Kraken.

  • This suggested a more relaxed regulatory stance on digital assets.

Still, Judge Torres’ decision shows the courts aren’t backing down from enforcing the law, even if the SEC softens its approach.

 What’s Next for Ripple

Ripple’s Chief Legal Officer Stuart Alderoty said the company has not yet decided what to do next. The SEC also declined to comment immediately after the ruling.

The options on the table:

  • Ripple and the SEC can withdraw their appeals and stick with the original judgment.

  • Or, they can continue to challenge the permanent injunction and fines in higher courts.

Either way, Ripple’s legal fight with the U.S. government is far from over.

What This Tells Us About Crypto Law in the U.S.

This ruling highlights a key issue in the crypto world: Can private settlements override public court rulings?

Judge Torres’ answer is clear—no.

She made it plain that even if both sides agree, they cannot cancel a judge’s decision on serious legal violations unless there are truly exceptional circumstances, which she said are completely lacking in this case.

 XRP and the Market Impact

Despite the legal drama, XRP continues to hold strong in the crypto rankings:

  • It is currently ranked #4 in global cryptocurrency market capitalization.

  • Traders and investors remain closely focused on the outcome of Ripple’s legal journey, as it could set major precedents for how other crypto companies are treated under U.S. law.

Ripple’s hopes of ending its years-long legal war with the SEC at a lower cost were dashed by Judge Torres, who made it clear that lawbreakers can’t simply settle their way out of final court rulings.

As the case continues, all eyes will remain on what Ripple and the SEC do next—and whether this signals a tougher era ahead for crypto regulation, despite political shifts in Washington.
