Asian Crypto Stocks Plunge as Bitcoin Hits Three-Week Low
Crypto Markets Take a Hit Amid Bitcoin Slump
Asian cryptocurrency stocks suffered significant losses on Feb. 3 as Bitcoin plunged to $91,163, marking its lowest level in over three weeks. The broader crypto market followed suit, with altcoins leading a sharp sell-off driven by growing concerns over trade wars and global economic uncertainty.
Major Crypto Stocks Suffer Heavy Losses
Japan’s Metaplanet, often compared to MicroStrategy for its Bitcoin treasury policy, took a steep fall, closing 9.44% lower on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. SBI Holdings, one of Japan’s largest crypto and blockchain investors, dropped 3.60%.
In Hong Kong, key publicly traded crypto firms also experienced sharp declines:
- OSL Group, which operates Hong Kong’s first licensed crypto exchange, fell 2.69%.
- Boyaa, Asia’s largest publicly traded Bitcoin holder, tumbled 4.64%.
Metaplanet was one of the biggest losers in the crypto stock market, reflecting the overall downturn in digital asset investments.
Trade War Fears Amplify Market Panic
According to Justin d’Anethan, head of sales at token launch advisory firm Liquifi, the sell-off is directly linked to fears over tariffs and broader economic instability. “You have an amplification as investors get fearful on either front,” he told Cointelegraph.
The impact of trade war tensions extended beyond crypto stocks. Japan’s Nikkei 225 declined 2.66%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng remained mostly stable, edging down just 0.04%.
US Tariffs Spark Global Uncertainty
The Asian stock market was hit hard after the United States announced new tariffs:
- 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada.
- 10% tariffs on Chinese imports.
In response, Canada and Mexico vowed to impose retaliatory tariffs, while China stated it would escalate the issue to the World Trade Organization (WTO).
What’s Next for Crypto Investors?
The uncertainty isn’t limited to Asia. US futures linked to major stock indexes are showing signs of further declines, signaling a tough trading week ahead.
“While this initially doesn’t look crypto-related, tariffs hint at a potential trade war, leading to a broad sell-off in risk assets, which then include Bitcoin, Ether (ETH), and other cryptocurrencies,” d’Anethan explained.
Lunar New Year Rally at Risk
Historically, the Lunar New Year trading window has been one of crypto’s most bullish seasonal trends. Data from digital asset firm Matrixport indicates that the 10 days before and after the holiday have an 83% success rate in terms of price gains.
However, with escalating fears of a global trade war, Bitcoin’s 10-year Lunar New Year winning streak is at risk of being snapped. Whether the market can recover from this downturn remains to be seen.
