Bitcoin’s Boring Days Are Over: Meet the Project Making It Programmable

Fractal Bitcoin: A New Programmable Layer Secured by Bitcoin Miners

Fractal Bitcoin is redefining what Bitcoin can do. While most people see Bitcoin as just digital gold, a new project led by Spencer Yang wants to turn it into a powerful platform for apps, payments, and more.

Yang, the co-founder of Fractal Bitcoin and managing partner of BlockSpaceForce, recently shared his vision in an interview with TheStreet Roundtable. His past experience includes helping build CoinMarketCap and leading retail products at Coinbase—and now, he’s setting his sights on Bitcoin’s next chapter.

Why Bitcoin Needs a Programmable Layer

Bitcoin is More Than a Store of Value

Two and a half years ago, Yang noticed a big gap in the Bitcoin ecosystem. While Bitcoin is highly trusted and secure as a store of value, it lacks easy tools for building payments systems, smart applications, and decentralized protocols.

Ethereum, Solana, and others have already tapped into that market—but Yang believes Bitcoin can do it too. “We can build on top of Bitcoin, without changing its core principles,” he said.

 What Makes Fractal Bitcoin Different

Built With Bitcoin Miners, Not Against Them

At Bitcoin 2025, many teams showcased different ways to scale the Bitcoin network. But Yang says Fractal’s secret weapon is that it works with Bitcoin—not around it.

Fractal uses something called merge-mining, which means Bitcoin miners can secure both the Bitcoin network and the Fractal network at the same time. This includes some of the biggest mining pools like:

  • Foundry

  • F2Pool

  • Antpool

  • ViaBTC

In fact, Yang says around 90% of Bitcoin’s total hash rate is already helping secure Fractal.

“We’re not competing with Bitcoin,” Yang said. “We’re amplifying it.”

How Fractal Works: 3 Key Design Principles

Yang broke down the Fractal protocol into three guiding ideas:

1. Miners Get More Rewards

Fractal gives additional rewards to the same miners already securing Bitcoin. This makes it profitable and simple for them to support Fractal too—without switching networks or buying new equipment.

2. Built on Bitcoin Script

Fractal smart contracts use Bitcoin Script, the same code that runs on the Bitcoin blockchain. This means developers who build on Fractal also contribute to Bitcoin’s long-term security.

3. Easy Movement of Assets

Users can move assets easily between Bitcoin and Fractal. This opens the door to real productivity—from fast payments and decentralized apps to new financial tools—without needing to sell or swap their Bitcoin.

Fractal is Like a Skyscraper—Bitcoin is Just the First Floor

To explain Fractal’s design, Yang offered a clever analogy: a skyscraper full of elevators.

“Bitcoin is the first level,” he said. “But if users want faster or more flexible features, they can go up to the second or third floor with Fractal.”

In simple terms, Fractal lets you do more with your Bitcoin—without leaving the building.

What’s Next for Fractal and Bitcoin?

Yang believes we’re just getting started. Over the next five years, he expects a surge in on-chain innovation, not just on Ethereum-like platforms, but directly tied to Bitcoin.

Fractal’s role? To offer developers a safe and secure space to build apps, launch protocols, and create entirely new markets—all backed by the most powerful mining network in crypto.

“We want to empower builders,” he said. “Bitcoin has the security. We just needed the right tools to make it work.”

Why This Matters for Everyday Users and Developers

Fractal’s system could help bridge the gap between Bitcoin and modern decentralized apps. That means:

  • Faster payments using Bitcoin

  • New types of wallets that support Fractal-based apps

  • Developers earning rewards for building directly on Bitcoin’s foundation

  • Miners getting extra revenue without extra cost

It’s a win-win-win—for miners, developers, and users.

 Bitcoin’s Next Evolution Is Here

Fractal Bitcoin isn’t trying to replace Bitcoin—it’s helping it grow smarter, faster, and more useful. By working with miners and using Bitcoin’s own security tools, it could unlock an entirely new wave of apps and financial tools—without changing the core of what makes Bitcoin so powerful.

If successful, Fractal could become the go-to layer for building on Bitcoin—not just storing it.
