Crypto Alert: Is This the Start of the Next Altcoin Bull Run?

Altcoin Season Returns? Bitcoin Slows While ETH, SUI, SEI Lead the Charge

After a historic rally that pushed Bitcoin just shy of $124,000, crypto investors are shifting their attention to altcoins. Ethereum (ETH), SUI, SEI, and other smaller tokens have seen explosive growth this week, signaling what many are calling the start of a new altcoin season.

But is it really happening? Let’s break it down.

Bitcoin Pauses After Setting New Highs

Bitcoin soared to record levels last week, climbing above $120,000 for the first time ever. The rally was largely driven by institutional demand, especially after the approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs in major global markets.

But this week, Bitcoin has started to consolidate. Prices hovered around $112,000–$124,000, as traders took profits and watched for the next move.

This cooling-off period has created a perfect window for altcoins to shine.

ETH, SUI, SEI Among Top Gainers

As Bitcoin takes a breather, capital is rotating into other cryptocurrencies:

  • Ethereum (ETH): Up 23.3%, powered by fresh institutional interest and layer-2 activity.

  • SUI: Surged 41%, thanks to growing adoption in decentralized finance (DeFi) and NFTs.

  • SEI: Jumped 36%, driven by strong developer activity and unique scaling solutions.

These sharp gains are not isolated cases. Many other altcoins have recorded 50–80% increases over the past week, marking a shift in momentum.

What Is Altcoin Season

Altcoin season refers to a market phase when cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin outperform the broader market — often by a huge margin.

In past cycles, altcoin seasons were hype-driven, often fueled by celebrities, crypto influencers, or viral social media buzz. Meme coins like Dogecoin or Shiba Inu would skyrocket despite little real-world use.

But this time is different.

A More “Mature” Altcoin Season

Unlike earlier hype-fueled rallies, the current altcoin surge seems more selective and project-focused. Tokens like SUI and SEI — which are tied to active blockchain ecosystems — are seeing the biggest gains.

According to CryptoQuant, the MRVR-based altcoin season indicator has entered “altcoin season” territory for the first time since June 2024, and it’s holding that trend.

MRVR (Market-Value-to-Realized-Value Ratio) compares current prices to average purchase prices. It helps spot when assets are overheated or undervalued.

During past bull runs, when the MRVR indicator stayed in altcoin season territory for multiple months, altcoins massively outperformed Bitcoin.

Memecoins Fall Out of Favor

Another key sign of a changing market: meme coin dominance is falling fast.

Once popular coins like MAGA and MAMA — linked to Donald Trump and Melania Trump — have flopped. Since early 2025, meme coin market share has dropped, reflecting a shift toward fundamentally strong crypto projects.

This is a clear contrast from earlier cycles where speculative meme tokens led the way.

Index Data Confirms Altcoin Strength

More indicators confirm the rising momentum in altcoins:

  • CoinDesk’s CD20 Index, which tracks 20 top altcoins, is now outperforming the CD5 index (which only includes BTC, ETH, XRP, SOL, and ADA).

  • CoinMarketCap’s Altcoin Season Barometer has jumped to 36 out of 100, the highest level in months. While not yet full-blown altcoin season, the upward move is significant.

All of this points to a shift — capital is moving beyond just Bitcoin and into the broader crypto space.

What Could Happen Next

Scenario 1: Bitcoin Holds Above $112K

If Bitcoin consolidates at current levels or stays above the $112,000 support, altcoins could continue their strong upward momentum. The market would see a broader rally, with smaller-cap tokens leading the charge.

Scenario 2: Bitcoin Drops Below Key Support

If Bitcoin falls back below $112,000, altcoins may take a hit. This is because altcoins are less liquid and often drop harder during volatile periods.

Scenario 3: Bitcoin Breaks Into New Highs

If BTC climbs beyond $124,000 toward new all-time highs, investors may rush back into Bitcoin, taking profits from altcoins. This could pause the altcoin rally temporarily.

Are We in an Altcoin Season

We may be in the early stages of an altcoin season. The data supports it, and capital flows are shifting. But this isn’t the wild west version of previous alt seasons. Instead, the market is rewarding tokens backed by solid technology, active users, and developer ecosystems.

The coming weeks will be key. Keep an eye on:

  • Bitcoin’s price trend

  • Institutional flows into ETH and other altcoins

  • Technical indicators like MRVR and dominance charts

Whether you’re a long-term investor or a short-term trader, now may be the time to research quality altcoin projects — the kind that thrive in real market cycles, not just hype.
