Crypto Gamechanger: DOGE ETF Inches Closer to Reality

Bitwise Amends Filing, Bringing Spot Dogecoin ETF One Step Closer

Signs of SEC Engagement Fuel Hopes for First-Ever Spot DOGE ETF

In a major development for crypto investors, Bitwise has updated its application to launch a spot Dogecoin ETF, signaling that regulatory approval might be within reach.

The move was seen by industry watchers as a positive sign that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is actively engaging with crypto firms about bringing Dogecoin (DOGE) to traditional financial markets via an exchange-traded fund.

“Good signs,” said Bloomberg Intelligence ETF analyst Eric Balchunas, noting that the amendment reflects the kind of dialogue the SEC has had in the past with ETF issuers before greenlighting other spot crypto ETFs.

 What’s a Spot Dogecoin ETF

A spot ETF allows investors to buy a fund backed directly by the cryptocurrency—in this case, Dogecoin—instead of just tracking futures contracts.

This means:

  • Investors don’t need a wallet or crypto exchange account.

  • The ETF would hold actual DOGE tokens.

  • It makes crypto more accessible to average investors using traditional brokerage accounts.

What Did Bitwise Change in Its Filing

Bitwise’s amended S-1 form includes a key feature:
“In-kind” redemptions and creations.

 What does that mean

Currently, all U.S. crypto ETFs are cash-based. That means when you invest in the fund:

  • Your dollars are converted into crypto (or vice versa) through cash transactions.

  • These conversions can trigger taxable events for investors.

In-kind transactions, on the other hand:

  • Allow broker-dealers to swap DOGE directly for ETF shares, or vice versa.

  • Avoid unnecessary tax events.

  • Improve efficiency and potentially lower costs.

“Near-lock at this point that in-kind will be allowed in spot ETFs across the board,” Balchunas added.

 What’s the Market Reaction

Despite the positive regulatory signals, Dogecoin’s price hasn’t surged.
DOGE was down about 2% in the past 24 hours, trading near $0.16.

That said, ETF approvals often move prices slowly at first, with stronger reactions coming once official approval or launch dates are announced.

Who Else Is in the Dogecoin ETF Race

Bitwise isn’t the only one trying to get a DOGE ETF approved.

  • 21Shares, a major player in the crypto ETF space, has also filed for a Dogecoin ETF.

  • Grayscale—known for its Bitcoin and Ethereum trusts—has filed for a Dogecoin Trust (not an ETF), with a relatively high 2.5% annual fee.

While Bitwise’s filing may be the most advanced, competition is heating up among firms trying to bring meme coins to Wall Street.

Why a Dogecoin ETF Could Be a Big Deal

Dogecoin started as a joke, but it’s now a top-10 cryptocurrency with a devoted following and wide recognition.

A spot ETF would:

  • Offer easy access to DOGE for stock market investors.

  • Provide institutional credibility to Dogecoin.

  • Likely increase demand and mainstream adoption of the coin.

It would also mark another step in the mainstreaming of meme coins and a softening of SEC policy under the current administration.

 What’s the SEC Thinking

So far, the SEC has been cautious about approving spot crypto ETFs. However:

  • Spot Bitcoin ETFs were approved in early 2024, setting a major precedent.

  • The SEC has since eased its stance on other cryptocurrencies, especially under President Donald Trump’s second term.

The fact that Bitwise has amended its filing indicates ongoing back-and-forth communication with the SEC—a promising sign for approval.

 What’s Next

The SEC has no deadline yet to respond to the amended filing, but based on past ETF cases, a decision could come within weeks or months.

If approved, the Bitwise Dogecoin ETF would be:

  • The first spot DOGE ETF in the U.S.

  • A major milestone for the wider adoption of Dogecoin and other altcoins.

  • A sign that the SEC may approve more meme coin ETFs in the future.

While Dogecoin’s price hasn’t reacted strongly just yet, Bitwise’s amended ETF filing is a clear signal that things are moving forward. Investors looking to get exposure to DOGE in a tax-efficient, regulated way may soon have a powerful new option on the market.

The coming weeks could be critical. If the SEC gives the green light, it might not just be a win for Bitwise—but a gamechanger for meme coins and the entire crypto ETF landscape.
